"I am inspired by working with people from all walks of life and all corners of the earth to achieve their goals of living and working in their land of choice."

Laura Danielson's Story
As a young girl, Laura lived in Taiwan and Singapore for a number of years, and got her first taste of international culture, a taste she has sought to satisfy ever since. These formative experiences led Laura to study multiple languages, attend a university in southern France, major in Chinese history in college, study at a law school in Shanghai while at the University of Minnesota, and eventually spend more than twenty years practicing immigration law. Having once been an immigrant herself, Laura understands a bit of what it is like to have left one's homeland to live in a foreign country and she believes that this makes her more empathetic to her clients.

Now the chair of the Immigration Department at Fredrikson & Byron, Laura has been instrumental in building a global alliance of immigration lawyers for ABIL who assist the group's mutlinational clients with their outbound immigration needs. She spends time regularly in her firm's Shanghai office working primarily on investor-based and EB-5 immigration matters and supervising in-bound China work. She is delighted to be able to live and work in a city she where she studied so many years earlier.

Laura has committed significant time to doing pro bono work for disadvantaged immigrants and received an award for her work from Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights in 1998. In 2010 Laura and her immigration team received the national Beacon of Justice award from the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), the oldest and largest U.S. non-profit association of individual legal professionals and legal organizations devoted to ensuring the delivery of legal services to the poor.

In addition to being a practicing immigration lawyer, Laura teaches immigration law at the University of Minnesota Law School and is coauthor with her former professor, David Weissbrodt, of Immigration Law and Procedure in a Nutshell, a popular and easy-to-read overview. She is currently working with fellow ABIL member Stephen Yale-Loehr on a book of photos and essays about modern-day immigrants, called Green Card Stories, which will be released in November, 2011. Laura considers herself fortunate to be able to combine her passions and interests with her life's work of serving the needs of immigrants.
